Apprenticeships at the AMRC Training Centre

Yesterday BBC Radio 4’s Today programme broadcast from the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in Rotherham.

As part of the programme’s University tour, host Justin Webb spoke to a number of apprentices about their experiences.

Many highlighted the benefits of the route they had taken: a more affordable route than the traditional degree, allowing them to develop technical skills by ‘replicating the place of work’, as well as nurturing softer skills including interview techniques.

The brainchild of a pioneering collaboration between Sheffield Hallam University, the University of Sheffield and the AMRC, the apprenticeship programmes draw upon the city’s manufacturing heritage to create a hub of industrial innovation and a model of civic engagement.

Enrolling 200 new apprentices each year – 70 per cent from local SMEs – the AMRC matches apprentices with the employers who will support their training.

John Bohan, Senior Director and Engineering and Manufacturing Lead at Elevation Recruitment Group, commented: “Historically, the Sheffield City Region has been reliant on traditional manufacturing, and while we now have a broader and mixed economic base, manufacturing still lies at the forefront of our economic productivity.

“The apprenticeship programmes featured recently on the Today programme are of key importance to our local economy; helping employers to address manufacturing skills gaps effectively and providing a viable solution to the shortages within the industry.

“Indeed, the unique methods of training and teaching implemented by the AMRC are providing apprentices with unprecedented access to future commercial relationships including the likes of major international firms Boeing, Rolls-Royce and Siemens, alongside smaller, locally based companies (some of which form part of the big firms’ supply chains).

“Employers can also benefit from this pivotal government initiative by drawing upon the skills of a highly-trained workforce, exposed to the very best in high-value manufacturing; while the University can develop the expertise of the next generation of manufacturing for the regions SMEs and economic strength.

“Here at Elevation Recruitment Group we are very proud that our Engineering and Manufacturing division is the recruitment partner of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMECHE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

“As a team, we recruit for a number of highly specialised engineering and manufacturing roles, and the calibre of candidates that we see is extremely high. We believe this is largely owed to the unique opportunities available to young people today through the university-employer partnerships presented by the AMRC.”
