Preformed Windings manufactures high voltage coils in their Sheffield based, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. With over 50 years of experience, they deliver worldwide, the highest quality motor and generator HV coils.

They are a trusted partner to large OEMs and rewind shops around the world and are highly experienced in working within very short lead times making Preformed Windings the supplier of choice.

Reporting into the MD this Head of Technical role will be a key member of the senior management team. You will take full responsibility and accountability for the proactive research and development initiatives for their cutting-edge manufacturing testing, techniques, and processes.

The Head of Technical will be instrumental in the delivery of long-term design innovation and quality of product from concept through to production, whilst modernising technologies within the business.  

The Head of Technical will be responsible for: 

• Strategic development for all long- and short-term strategies with the ongoing development of innovative design processes
• Provide technical leadership to the team and wider business
• Own the NPI process, pre-production design, testing and R&D activities
• Develop and manage tools for capturing and communicating project complexities at pre-production stages (tendering and pre-production engineering) 
• Investigate and implement the application of new technologies
• Carry out technical risk assessments on early-stage product design or customer scope to identify technological challenges at the earliest possible opportunity 
• Define and implement a gated NPI process
• Work with project management to allocate required technical resources to tasks to ensure a smooth product launch into production 
• Develop a continuous improvement culture; set high standards and ongoing excellence throughout, with a right first-time approach 
• Identify skills and gaps within the team; coach, mentor and motivate, promoting development opportunities and succession planning 
• R&D Project management with CAPEX deployment from concept to completion
• Build key relationships with the wider organisation and customers to support the overall service, delivery, and image of the company.

The Head of Technical will need to demonstrate skills and experience in the following areas:

• Qualification in an electrical, mechanical or materials engineering discipline
• Experience or working in a highly regulated, quality driven, client focused environment manufacturing or engineering environment
• Demonstrable skills in project management, specifically research and development
• Previous experience in improving the quality of products, its characteristics and measurement of quality performance 
• Experienced in reducing process and quality assessment time
• Strong problem-solving skills with an analytical approach to products, processes, services, and quality with exceptional attention to detail 
• A desire to improve products, systems, and processes with cutting edge techniques
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to develop, maintain key relationships and deliver reports to board members and customers
