Congratulations Steph Sierny on 5 years at Elevation Recruitment Group

Following her recent 5-year anniversary at Elevation Recruitment Group, Steph shares her impressive career journey, what she hopes to achieve in the next 5 years and what has been her biggest achievements to date.

Steph is the Divisional Manager for Transactional & Part Qualified Finance and specialises in the recruitment of permanent roles across Sheffield and South Yorkshire. Since joining the business in 2017, Steph has played an integral part within our Accountancy & Finance brand and has subsequently progressed from a consultant, through to managing a team based on her hard work, commitment, and first-class service delivery.

Steph has an outstanding reputation in the market for her ability to deliver honest, non-bias and tailored advice to both candidates and clients alike and is known for always going above and beyond in any situation.

In addition to Steph’s recruitment responsibilities, her wider role involves working with the team of specialist finance consultants to develop a business development plan and ensure consistent levels of service on assignment delivery as well as, overseeing the candidate generation strategy to maintain our position as market leaders in the local area.

What initially attracted you to a career in recruitment?

To be honest, working in recruitment wasn’t something I’d thought much about until I received a message from Fran Lee (Senior Director) at Elevation on LinkedIn. At the time, I was 2 years post-University and was working as part of a Graduate Scheme in Sales/Customer Service managing my own team and office, but I had started to question my long-term career plans. 

I’ve always been very people-oriented and knew I wanted to lead a team, but the industry was still in question. After meeting Fran, it was a no-brainer! Recruitment is all about people and building relationships, which massively played to my strengths and areas of interest. I’ve always been the type of person to give 110% and so I wanted to work for a business and in an industry that would acknowledge and reward that… so recruitment and Elevation became an obvious choice.

How has your career progressed since joining Elevation?

Where do I begin! When I first started, I knew little-to-nothing about the world of recruitment and 5 years on, I’m responsible for my own team and division.

The progression opportunities at Elevation have been endless. I love that you get out what you put in and that we reward people based on hard-work and merit, rather than just tenure. Since joining the business I’ve had 4 promotions and, as a naturally ambitious person, I don’t plan on stopping there!

What do you enjoy most about working at Elevation as a Company? What has kept you here for 5 years?

First of all - the people! I have never met such a genuine, hard-working, supportive, and lovable team of people in a work environment, and I truly believe that the culture we have is second to none. Yes, we work hard, and the industry has its challenges, but the fun and camaraderie we have together makes it worthwhile.

The development opportunities are also something I’m very grateful for. I’ve worked exceptionally hard over the last 5 years to get where I am today, but that also wouldn’t be possible without the support and mentorship that I’ve had around me. At every stage of my career with Elevation I’ve felt challenged, encouraged, and supported and I think that while any employee feels valued and heard, they’re unlikely to want to leave!

We’re a very dynamic and entrepreneurial business which has really shaped my way of thinking. I love that the business challenges me and that I can challenge the business too.

The all-inclusive socials and trips abroad definitely help too.

What do you enjoy most about working in recruitment and specifically within the accountancy and finance sector?

As a natural “people-person” with an interest in psychology, what I enjoy most about recruitment is the opportunity to work with and speak to so many different people with varying interests and backgrounds. After 5 years, I still get a buzz and massive sense of satisfaction when I know I’ve contributed towards finding a candidate their dream job and supporting a client with a key role in their business. The relationship piece for me is massive.

In terms of the Accountancy & Finance division, specifically, I would say it’s the competitive nature of the market, as it gives us a real opportunity to stand out amongst our competition, which I believe we do. I take great pride in the fact that we are all dedicated to our markets which means we don’t just say we’re “specialists”, but we actually are!

The professionals in our sector are also a pleasure to work with – they are driven and incredibly committed to their careers, so I feel I can really relate to them on a personal level.

Don’t get me wrong, some days in recruitment can be long and intense, but at the same time I love the fast-paced nature of our industry and that no two days are the same. There’s always something new and fun to get your teeth into and every day is a learning day – even after 5 years.

What do you enjoy most about your role as Divisional Manager?

What I love the most about my role is that it was moulded to fit and suit me, as well as the business. We aren’t a “one size fits all” organisation. We acknowledge and appreciate that everyone has different strengths, goals and interests and we always do our best to support and utilise them, so people feel valued and happy.

Since I became Divisional Manager, I’ve not only been responsible for the day to day running of the team and overseeing the recruitment lifecycle and market strategy, but I’ve also had the opportunity to contribute towards the business as a whole, whilst working with leaders across the business, which I really enjoy. Having the support from Andy Bath (Senior Director of the A&F brand) has also been a massive contributing factor to my success and love for the job. I am very grateful to have such talented people around me who I can learn from and grow with.

My role would not be the same if it wasn’t for the talented and inspiring bunch of people that I get to call my team. There’s no doubt that the most enjoyable part of my role is supporting them with their career journeys and being a part of their learning and development. I’m very lucky that I’ve been able to combine my passion for recruitment along with helping my own team progress, as there’s nothing that gives me greater satisfaction.

What has been your biggest achievement during your time at Elevation?

Being promoted to Divisional Manager after only 3 years in recruitment is something I am incredibly proud of.

One of my biggest achievements is the growth and success of the Transactional Finance team. Having the autonomy and trust to build my own team is something I am very grateful for and fortunate to be able to do. I have the best group of people around me (both as people and recruiters) and feel honoured to have been a large contributing factor in bringing them on-board and their on-going development.

What has been your biggest learning curve?

Getting to grips with spinning so many plates and juggling so many balls, while never letting your standards slip.

This is something I talk a lot about when interviewing potential people for my team as I think it takes a lot of people by surprise just how busy and on-the-ball we are.

My biggest learning curve was when I stepped into a leadership position as I probably underestimated the scale of what I was getting myself into. I managed staff in my previous role and had just got to grips with the world of recruitment but combining the two was definitely a bigger and harder job than I had imagined.

Thankfully, I love a challenge and it paid off!

What would you like to see the next 5 years look like? What are you hoping to achieve in that time?

It’s hard to say. Because we are such a rapidly growing, forward-thinking business I know that the opportunities are endless, so it’s exciting to think of where I could be in another 5 years from now.

In terms of the team – my plan is to continue growing the division so we can cement our position as market leaders in Accountancy & Finance, while also making sure everyone has fun and feels valued along the way.

Managing multiple divisions/brands is also something I’d love to do overtime, so watch this space.

What advice would you give to someone about to start working in recruitment?

Buckle up!

Recruitment is a rollercoaster of a ride and can be an extremely rewarding job, but it’s not for the faint hearted. I believe you have to be in it for the right reasons and with the intention of building a “career” not just a job, if you want to be successful. Yes, the financial rewards are unrivalled (at least at Elevation!) but that should come hand-in-hand with a good reputation and doing things the right way. It’s a competitive market and so you need to stand out for all the right reasons.

For me, if you’re questioning whether recruitment is right for you or not, it comes down to attitude and application.

A system and a process can be taught, but there are certain attributes which I believe make a truly “great” recruiter - commitment, confidence, resilience, outstanding people-skills, a good sense of humour and a thick skin.
