 Interview with Jemma

Can you give us a whistle stop tour of your career?

After I graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a degree in International Events Management, I wanted to find a career that I could put my organisation and time management skills into practice, and work with various groups of people. At that point I initially thought a career in administration was right for me.

So, I successfully applied for an administration role within a national recruitment agency, supporting with general recruitment tasks for the Yorkshire regions, and then progressed into a supervisory role. I quickly realised that I had a real passion for recruitment and enjoyed the communication side to the role and the accomplishments of matching clients with candidates, so I moved into the role of Account Coordinator and subsequently developed into an Account Manager.

As an Account Manager, I oversaw the recruitment needs of four sites for one FMCG client across the Yorkshire region. I was responsible for the Account Coordinator’s outputs, liaising with the clients to ensure we were adhering to our service level agreement and the recruitment demands.

What attracted you to the role at Elevation?

Whilst I was ready and looking for my next career move, I knew I wanted to work within a team that although was very specialist and niche, I could build a larger network of clients and candidates and really commit to learning all aspects of the industry.

Pete Simmonds (Divisional Director of the Engineering & Manufacturing and Procurement & Supply Chain divisions) reached out to me, and explained who Elevation are, their specialisms within the engineering and manufacturing division and what the role entailed. I felt there was so much I could learn, from what appeared to be an established and knowledgeable team.

Having already worked with FMCG clients and blue-collar candidates, I am very familiar with the process and technical specifications of these roles, so I knew I could help to grow the division and learn from the experts along the way.

What attracted you to Elevation as a recruitment agency?

Whilst speaking to Pete, he gave me an insight into the culture at Elevation and it sounded very exciting and professional, but also very supportive, which was something I wanted to get right in my next role.

I spent some time looking into the company, reading reviews, looking at the company socials, to really grasp the values and the culture. I saw the number of roles they were recruiting for on the website, so it was clear Elevation was a highly successful company.

I also saw how invested they were in people development and progression, which really stood out for me. Having read some of the anniversary blogs, it looked like people really enjoyed working at Elevation and have stood the test of time. That’s always a good sign when considering a move.

In three words how would you describe our company on first perception?

Friendly, driven and innovative.

What do you enjoy most about working in recruitment as a whole?

Every day is different, and you meet so many different people that it keeps each day exciting and fresh. Speaking to candidates with very different personalities, backgrounds and at varying levels of their career, I have to be able to adapt to their way of communicating, and work with them to achieve their goals, which is always a welcomed challenge.

I enjoy building relationships with clients, working very closely with them, I can instantly recognise what type of candidate their looking for, that not only meet their specifications of the role, but fit culturally too - I think that’s a really important factor when making a placement.

What do you enjoy most about recruiting for the Manufacturing sector?

Recruiting for this sector is extremely fast paced, the turnover can be extremely high or in very busy order periods, require a large intake of new starters, which can very demanding but worthwhile on delivery.

Having previously worked solely for a client within the food production sector, I would spend a lot of time on the shop floor, seeing the full process of the manufacturing line, from ingredients, right through to final produce. I find it extremely fascinating, and it makes the recruitment process easier as I can visualise the role of the candidate.

What are you hoping to achieve in your role at Elevation?

I’m hoping to make a positive contribution to the team and help expand the division, hit all of my KPI’s, build a bigger network of clients and candidates and in the long term, progress and develop in my career.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I am very active, so in my spare time I like to go out running with my dog. I love spending time with my friends and family.

I also used to swim in competitions nationally, so I still like to keep up with swimming as much as possible. I was also lucky enough to run with the Olympic torch in 2012 which was a huge achievement for me.
