Interview with Rachael

______________________________________________

Can you give us a whistle stop tour of your career?

I initially began my working life within the hospitality sector, which took me overseas to Australia.

In 2015, I returned to the UK and was unsure of what I wanted to do career wise, at that time a friend had been working as a recruitment consultant and recommended both the agency and the industry, so I thought I would give it a go and successfully applied for a position.

I joined the recruitment agency, working in one of their Sheffield branches to specialise in temporary and permanent business support roles. I started my recruitment career as a consultant, then progressed into a Senior Consultant and then on to a Principal Consultant. After a couple of years, I was recognised internally and asked to take on an additional role as an Office Support Channel Lead for the Yorkshire region, which was a real personal achievement. During my time there, I also gained experience in recruitment for procurement and supply chain and property and surveying.

In 2020, I decided to take on a new challenge and focus on the wider Human Resources side of recruitment, so I joined the NHS as a temporary Medical HR Assistant. I was responsible for compliance and the recruitment of doctors, but I was also involved in other aspects of people development.

When the contract came to an end, I realised how much I missed 360 recruitment, the sales driven environment and the networking. I always really enjoyed building relationships with clients and candidates and business development, which was the reason I joined Elevation.

What attracted you to Elevation?

Whilst working at the previous agency, I built some great relationships with other recruiters, who had since joined Elevation. At the end of my contract with the NHS, I spoke to two of my previous colleagues and they recommended Elevation, explained their experience with the business, the progression opportunities and how motivating and encouraging the environment was.

As I had worked in recruitment for 5 years, there was rarely a candidate or client that I had spoken with that didn’t mention Elevation in such a positive light. The company has an excellent reputation in the region, so when considering my next move, it was so important to me to work for an agency with that reassurance in the marketplace.

In three words how would you describe our company on first perception?

Friendly, professional, welcoming.

What do you enjoy most about working in recruitment as a whole?

I like the variation that comes with the role, it keeps each day exciting and different. New challenges, new people and new businesses.

Working in recruitment is really rewarding, the sales driven environment means there are a lot of perks too which is always a good thing!  I find recruitment is based on genuine long-standing relationships and having an interest in people really helps. Meeting the sales targets are satisfying, but at the same time you are also helping people that you have spent a lot of time getting to know to get the role they really want.

It is also very rewarding placing candidates in roles and watching them progress in their career over the years.

What do you enjoy most about recruiting for the Business Support sector?

I enjoy how fast paced business support is and it’s great to have so much contribution to someone’s career. Quite often when candidates are stepping into the lower-level roles, they don’t necessarily know what they want to do career wise, and they need the consultative approach. It is satisfying to know the advice I provide throughout the recruitment process can help a candidate who may have initially felt a little lost, determine their careers.

In previous years, I have worked with a number of candidates that were just looking for a stop gap job that could give them with the means to save money to go travelling. But having placed them in progressive companies, the candidates have loved the role, stayed at the business and progressed into management level.

Working in business support recruitment is also extremely varied because the roles are so broad. I get to work with a wide scope of candidates, but also businesses from different sectors. I could be working with an engineering business one day, an IT business another day and public sector the next.

What are you hoping to achieve in your role at Elevation?

Since I have had some time out of 360 recruitment, I am keen to get back into networking and establish client and candidate relationships again. I also want to build my reputation back in the business support region.

I am looking forward to working with the team in business support, build my own desk within the division and hopefully bring some additional skills to help support the sector that is already very successful.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I am an outdoor person, but I have a toddler so she is reigning in what I would have done in my spare time before children.

We have a caravan, so as a family we spend a lot of time visiting the Lake District and Northumberland. During lockdown it has been our escape.
