How to know if a role is right for you

One of the main reasons job hunting can be a long, arduous and sometimes stressful task is that work is inextricably linked with who we are and how people see us and finding a job that fits you like a glove is not always easy and can take time.

Crucially, when considering a career move, you should always think beyond the responsibilities of the role and the salary offered, and ensure that the position and the organisation are aligned with your own brand values. 

Some points to consider when deciding if a role is right for you

  1. Make sure you’re clear on what you want from a job and check that the job description aligns with this. Salary is an obvious place to start, but think about whether you can see yourself doing the day-to-day tasks listed and whether your skills will be put to good use.
  1. Check that the company is willing to offer you everything you need – think what you want your contract to include, aside from your salary, as part of your overall ‘package’. Alongside private healthcare or a company car you might want a commitment to let you work flexible hours in order to juggle family commitments or to undertake additional study.
  1. Don’t just think about the present - consider the future, too. Where do you see yourself in five years? Are there opportunities at the organisation that you can see yourself aspiring to and working towards?
  1. Meet your team before you sign on the dotted line. Can you see yourselves working together successfully? Can you see where you would fit within the team dynamics and what you would bring to the group?
  1. Research the company thoroughly – How many employees will you be working alongside? What are the company’s values? How do they position themselves in the industry? All important questions that will help you decide whether the role is right for you.
