How to Nail Your Marketing Interview

By Charlotte Pike, Business Consultant

Landing your dream marketing job is all about showcasing your skills and passion. But with so much competition, how do you make yourself stand out? The answer: preparation and powerful storytelling.

Here's your guide to conquering your marketing interview using methods like the STAR Technique (Situation, Task, Action, Result) and real-life examples to demonstrate your capabilities.

1. The STAR Technique:

Imagine a behavioural interview question like, "Tell me about a time you increased brand awareness." Don't just say, "We created a social media campaign."

STAR it up!

  • Situation: Briefly set the scene. "I was working as a social media manager for a local bakery, noticing their online presence wasn't generating the buzz we desired."
  • Task: Define your objective. "My task was to develop a social media strategy to increase brand awareness and customer engagement."
  • Action: Explain your specific actions. "I implemented a multi-platform approach, focusing on visually appealing food photos and interactive contests. I also partnered with local influencers to reach a wider audience."
  • Result: Quantify your impact. "Within three months, I grew our follower base by 200%, and website traffic from social media referrals jumped by 35%. We even saw a 10% rise in in-store sales." (Notice the switch to "I" to claim ownership of the achievement).

2. Live and Breathe the Company:

Before the interview, delve deeper than the company website. Research their values, community initiatives, and recent awards. Jot down notes in your interview prep document. During the interview, sprinkle this knowledge in naturally.

Example: "I see you recently won an award for sustainable packaging. Your commitment to eco-friendly practices aligns perfectly with my values. I'm particularly interested in learning more about your community garden project." This shows genuine enthusiasm and initiative by going beyond basic research.

3. Don't Just Ask, Engage:

Prepare at least three insightful questions beyond salary and benefits. Ask about upcoming marketing projects, team culture, or their approach to staying ahead of industry trends.

Example: "I noticed you're launching a new product line this fall. How can I contribute to the marketing strategy and ensure its success? Additionally, I'd love to hear more about your team's approach to staying on top of the latest marketing trends." This demonstrates your eagerness to get involved and your commitment to development.

4. Development, Not Progression:

Instead of simply saying, "I want to progress in my marketing career," rephrase it as, "I'm passionate about professional development and expanding my skillset in [specific marketing area], particularly [mention a relevant company initiative you learned about during research]." This highlights your commitment to growth aligned with the company's direction.

5. A Recruiter's Insight:

We work closely with marketing teams. When prepping, reach out to your recruiter. "I'm interviewing for a marketing role at [company name]. Do you have any insights into the team's current needs and priorities?" This leverages your recruiter's knowledge to tailor your interview approach. At Elevation our team of specialist marketing recruiters are always on hand to support you with this insight when preparing for your interview.

6. Dress for Success:

First impressions matter. Tailor your outfit to the company culture. Aim for professional attire that reflects the industry. Opt for a polished look for a corporate environment, while a creative agency might allow for a more relaxed style.

7. Be Early, Be Prepared:

Punctuality shows respect. Aim to arrive 10-15 minutes early. Bring a portfolio showcasing your best work, whether it's past marketing campaigns, design samples, or writing pieces.

8. Follow Up:

Send a thank-you email within 24 hours, reiterating your interest in the position and highlighting key points discussed during the interview. Mention something specific you learned about the company or the role to show you were engaged.

By following these tips and mastering the STAR technique, you'll be well on your way to nailing your marketing interview and landing your dream job!
