How to Optimise Your LinkedIn Profile When You Are Job Searching Without Alerting Your Boss

By Amy Scrafield, Senior Consultant

LinkedIn is one of the first places recruiters look when they are searching for candidates. A strong, up-to-date profile dramatically increases your chances of being found for the right opportunities, even when you are not actively applying for anything.

The challenge is that many people are nervous about updating their profile while still in their current role. Those concerns are understandable. But there are ways to make your profile work harder for you without broadcasting that you are looking.

Turn Off Activity Broadcasts First

Before making any changes, go to your LinkedIn privacy settings and switch off 'Share profile updates with your network.' This stops LinkedIn from notifying your connections every time you update your headline, add a new skill, or change your photo.

You can also control whether your Open to Work status is visible to everyone or only to recruiters. If you choose to switch it on, use the recruiter-only setting.

Update Your Headline Beyond Your Job Title

Your headline appears under your name in every search result and is one of the most important fields for visibility. Many people leave it as their job title alone, which is a missed opportunity.

A stronger headline describes what you do and the value you bring. 'Senior Mechanical Engineer | Automotive and Aerospace | Six Sigma Black Belt' tells a recruiter far more than 'Engineer at Acme Manufacturing.' Updating your headline looks like good professional housekeeping rather than a signal you are moving on.

Write an About Section That Points Forward

Most people either leave this blank or copy their CV summary into it. Neither approach works well.

Write in first person. Talk about what you are good at, the kinds of problems you enjoy solving, and the work that brings out your best. You do not need to say you are actively looking. A well-written About section naturally signals the kind of opportunity you would welcome.

Make Your Experience Keyword-Rich

Recruiters use LinkedIn search to find candidates using specific keywords. If the skills, tools, qualifications, and job titles relevant to your field are not mentioned in your profile, you simply will not appear in those searches.

Go through your experience section and add substance to each role. Include the systems, methodologies, and sector-specific terminology that would appear in a job description for the kind of role you want next.

Ask for Recommendations From Previous Roles

Recommendations from former managers, colleagues, or clients add credibility and social proof to your profile. Asking a previous employer for one is a completely normal professional action and does not signal anything about your current situation.

Reach out to two or three people from previous roles and ask if they would be willing to write a brief recommendation. Profiles with recommendations consistently perform better in recruiter searches.

Engage to Stay Visible

LinkedIn's algorithm favours active users. Commenting on posts in your sector, sharing relevant articles, or occasionally publishing a short piece all increase your visibility without requiring you to say anything about your job search.

A thoughtful comment on an industry discussion puts your name in front of people in your network naturally. It also builds the impression of someone engaged and knowledgeable in their field, which is exactly what a recruiter wants to see.
