Following her recent promotion to Executive Resourcing Manager within the Engineering and Manufacturing division, Gemma shares an insight into how her career journey has evolved over the last 12 years at Elevation, how she balances motherhood with a successful career and recruitment life at Elevation.

Congratulations on your promotion Gemma, how does it feel to be starting your new position as Executive Resourcing Manager?

Since joining Elevation, my career has exceeded all expectations. I’ve had a number of promotions, and prior to this one, my most recent was just last summer - I feel a huge sense of pride.

I can honestly say that my contribution to the business has always been valued, and it shows yet again with the recognition I’ve received today. I am very happy!

A part of the original start up team 12 years ago, how has it been to witness the company’s growth?

To be a part of and witness the business, go from a start-up, focused on building the brand and its reputation in the market, to the region’s leading and go-to recruiter, achieving incredible milestones, partnering with some of the most reputable businesses and forming an unmatched talent pool, is a huge achievement and one that I take great pride in, especially as an employee that has been on the company’s journey from the beginning.

How has your career journey evolved with Elevation?

My journey has been a great one, it’s never been at a standstill, and I’ve always had the opportunity to develop and learn new skills.

I’ve worked across each of our specialist divisions, recruiting permanent, interim and temporary professionals at all levels, whilst also, supporting new consultants with training and mentoring, which has been vital in the continuous improvement of my own skillset and subsequent career journey.

Since 2018, my role has been tailored to support the leadership recruitment demands for John Bohan (Senior Director), Pete Simmonds (Senior Director) and Ian Bruce (Regional Director) of the Engineering & Manufacturing division and Carl Walker (Associate Director) of the Procurement & Supply Chain division and wider team on key projects, which is extremely rewarding.

Witnessing the Engineering & Manufacturing division become the largest regional team of its kind, has been incredible – there is no limit to how far this division will grow.

Balancing motherhood and a career can be a challenge, how has the business supported you in that, whilst continuing a progressive and successful career?

Elevation has always been a family first business, with incredible flexibility and a caring understanding for the challenges that comes with parenthood.

From time to time, I am faced with out of school activities, parents’ evenings and illnesses with little time to plan and prepare. Elevation have always been so accommodating, and approach these situations with, ‘do what you need to, and how can we support you’.

Despite being a parent, I’ve always had a real commitment to my career and for me, I never wanted to lose that independence and driven side, but I knew I needed to balance out work and life to suit my family, which was when I reduced my hours to a four-day week.

With that arrangement in place, I have continued to receive constant support, development opportunities and career progression, which has given me the perfect personal and professional balance and makes me more excited for what’s to come.  

Throughout your career at Elevation, you have worked in most of our specialist departments, what would you say has driven their success?

As each of our specialist divisions have grown and developed over time, our approach and core values have never altered - we are committed to delivering a consistent quality service.

From day one, Greg Parkinson (CEO) and the leadership team have hired people that share our values, are customer service driven, take great pride in their careers and truly want their division to succeed. We don’t just keep seats warm; we shape genuine specialists and that has a profound effect on the relationships we’ve built over the years and the now exceptional success of our 8-core division.

As one of our long-standing employees, what is it like to work at Elevation, with our Senior Management team, within our culture and collaboratively with the wider team?

The senior management team are extremely supportive and encouraging, whether that’s needing advice on how to solve a specific issue, sharing their knowledge of a new selling technique, or support and guidance with your next promotion opportunity. And unlike many businesses, the Directors sit side by side with us in our open workspace, so you have access to them every day.

We work hard and we are rewarded extraordinarily for it, with an uncapped commission structure, all-expense paid trips abroad, a health and wellbeing programme, 3pm Friday finishes, remote and hybrid working arrangements and that’s just to name a very few!

The business gives a great deal of trust and autonomy to each person, we are encouraged to take ownership and manage our workload, feel comfortable to ask for help, share improvement tactics or ideas, we celebrate each other wins and we have a fantastic team spirit. I’d say all those are signs of a great company culture.
