Q&A with Gemma Chapman – Promotion to Senior Executive Resourcer

Following her recent promotion to Senior Executive Resourcer within the Engineering and Manufacturing division, Gemma shares her thoughts on working in recruitment, her career progression to date and life at Elevation.


Interview with Gemma


What initially attracted you to work in recruitment?

I have worked in recruitment now for over 16 years and what initially attracted me to the industry remains the same, knowing I can make a difference to both candidates and clients; whether that be supporting a candidate in identifying their next role or helping a client in the search for the perfect person that will essentially add value to the business.

Working in recruitment really plays to my strengths, I can combine my organisation skills with my approachable personality to make an impact on people’s lives.

What did you do prior to joining elevation?

I initially started my career in the motor industry, working as a Business Administrator within a vibrant sales environment. This role equipped me with the right level of confidence to develop my skills further.

I then secured a role working for a Group of companies that specialised in direct marketing on a Global Scale. I was responsible for providing executive support to a group of Directors based in the UK and Europe, whilst managing the end-to-end business function and the facilities within it. This position quickly evolved and gave me a great opportunity and first introduction to recruitment, including all aspects of: on and offline advertising; pre-screen telephone interviews; diary management through to selection; referencing and vetting.

I was then promoted into the role of Recruitment Manager through the support I had given to multiple offices and the wider recruitment teams.

Why did you join Elevation?

In my previous role, Simon Ensor (Senior Business Manager of Accountancy and Finance) and I worked together for a short period of time. I am a big believer in everything happens for a reason and at this point, my role was being made redundant due to office closure. Simon contacted me to ask if I would be interested in joining Elevation as a Recruitment Secretary. It was very early days for Elevation; the idea of joining a start-up business excited me and I have worked for the business ever since.

How has your career progressed since joining Elevation?

I initially joined the business as a Recruitment Secretary and provided support to the consultants with general administration and database management, whilst assisting with the day-to-day business activities.

I then moved into Transactional Finance where I developed both my skills and market knowledge of the specialist sector, becoming the main point of contact for all temporary and interim recruitment. As the business grew, we introduced the Business Support division, where I managed the recruitment of permanent; interim and temporary positions, but also mentored new consultants into the division, ahead of my first maternity leave.

When I returned, I moved into our Marketing division to assist in coaching and resourcing for the team and supported the CIM regional team in the delivery of events.

After having my second child, I was flexible in my return to work and suggested that the business use my skills wherever needed. Which led to my role of Executive Resourcer, that I began in 2018. Providing support to John Bohan (Senior Director) with his ever-increasing workload for all Senior, Leadership and Management recruitment within the Engineering & Manufacturing sector.

What will your role as Senior Executive Resourcer entail?

My role has evolved, as has the division. Going forward, I will provide support to the directors within Engineering & Manufacturing and Procurement & Supply Chain: Pete Simmonds (Divisional Director of E&M and Procurement and Supply Chain), Ian Bruce (Divisional Director of E&M) and John Bohan (Senior Director).

I will also continue to support clients with executive search projects and ensure the consultants in the wider team have resources to deliver to our clients on key hires.

What has been your biggest learning curve?

Developing my market knowledge and skills required across a range of levels that I have recruited for over time. For most of my career, I have recruited across various sectors and specialisms, which naturally takes time to understand the industry, the peaks, troughs and what each client requires from their candidates.

Additionally, returning to work on four days a week after having two children and turning my work head on to focus completely on that, has been something I have proven to adapt to and manage successfully.  

Overall, the biggest learning curve was being able to do my job well and establish the trust and respect to deliver for my clients and candidates.

What do you enjoy most about working recruitment?

I get great enjoyment out of placing candidates in the right business, especially now that I recruit for leadership appointments, where they make such an impact to the overall success of a business. Throughout my experience I have learned that service delivery is everything, and small adjustments or suggestions you can offer to make their life easier is appreciated above anything else.

As an Executive Resourcer, I can throw myself into any market and help our consultants wherever they need me. Something I take great satisfaction in is helping my colleagues succeed and deliver but equally, knowing that we have delivered again to our clients and candidates.

What advice would you give to someone about to start working in recruitment?

Listen, to everything; soak up every bit of information whether that be from your peers, clients, or candidates. If you are uncertain, ask the question. People would rather you felt confident in what you have been tasked to do, to deliver the best service possible.

Be honest and remember the process is the same, irrespective of level.

What are the benefits to working at Elevation?

My husband and I are going on a short city break at the end of the month and will celebrate with a nice meal and a few drinks.
