Q&A with Jack Heffren – Promotion to Senior Consultant

Following his recent promotion to Senior Consultant within the Engineering and Manufacturing division, Jack shares his thoughts on working in recruitment, his career progression to date and life at Elevation.

Interview with Jack


What initially attracted you to a career in recruitment?

I initially reached out to Elevation as a candidate, however, after sitting down with Sarah Mounsey (Business Manager of Technical Marketing and IT, previously Head of Talent) about a consultant role within Elevation, it really piqued my interest. Sarah explained what the job entailed, the business development side to it and gave me some background on the business and the industry as a whole.

I was sold on recruitment when I understood that it wasn’t just a case of moving candidates from one job into another, it was building relationships, visiting client sites, understanding their products or services, and ultimately, playing a pivotal role in a company’s journey and people’s careers.

I liked the idea that I could develop my skillset and be responsible for growing the division through my own achievements. It was an exciting challenge.

What did you do prior to joining elevation?

After I graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a degree in Business Law, I joined a Graduate Scheme in an automotive rental business. I wanted to be a part of a training programme where I could learn how to manage and develop a business. During my time there, I progressed from Graduate Trainee/ Management Assistant to Branch Manager.

I was responsible for interviewing graduates and managers for various trainee and management positions, building and maintaining relationships and business referrals and working directly with customers to provide an excellent level of service. These transferrable skills in both service and sales have been a driving force to the success I have experienced in recruitment. 

Why did you join Elevation?

Having spoken to John Bohan (Senior Director of Engineering and Manufacturing division) and Greg Parkinson (CEO), I was inspired by Elevation’s growth plan. They explained how they wanted to build standalone sectors within the Engineering and Manufacturing division and within that, I could potentially build my own specialist desk and team to support that.

As an extremely driven person, I have no ceiling on where I want my career to progress to, so knowing that I was joining a company that is just as ambitious and recognises hard work, was so important.

How has your career progressed since joining Elevation?

When I joined Elevation, I didn’t know anything about recruitment, and I was unfamiliar with the engineering and manufacturing industry, so I was building a new career from scratch.

I began as a Consultant in the Engineering and Manufacturing division where I was recruiting for people focused roles, such as management and team leaders. I quickly found that my strengths were with the technical side of engineering, and I have since established the sector into its own desk.

In the first 6 -12 months, I worked closely with John Bohan to build up my market knowledge and then with Ian Bruce (Regional Director of E&M) to learn more specifically about technical engineering. Over the last 2 years, I have been mentored by Peter Simmonds (Divisional Director), he has taught me how to become a better all rounded consultant and to take ownership and build the sector into its own business.

What will your role as senior consultant entail?

As a Senior Consultant, I will be responsible for further developing our technical division and building a team of specialist technical recruiters that will help to expand the 3 main areas within my remit, technical engineering, continuous improvement, and other technical areas that may fall into the wider engineering division. In support of this, I have recently taken on additional technical roles such as, laboratory engineers/managers, capex/project engineers and more.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I have enjoyed the independence on both a client and candidate side from day one. Having full ownership and trust from the business to develop and grow your own desk from an early stage is really rewarding. I had experience of this in my previous roles managing a full P&L and a team of employees, however, been new to recruitment, it was great to tackle this new challenge head on.

As soon as you finish the initial onboard training, you are given the autonomy to meet with clients, support them all the way through the recruitment cycle, be able to manage your job intake and even negotiate your own fees. You are trusted completely, have accountability for your own work and are able to build a personal network.

What do you enjoy most about working in Engineering and Manufacturing recruitment?

I enjoy working with technical professionals because I learn so much about how products are developed across a range of industries, its fascinating. I also like visiting client sites to see first-hand how products come together, from concept to completion. The visits allow me to see how and where my candidates contribute to the design, development, and engineering process.

What advice would you give to someone about to start working in recruitment?

Building good relationships is the key to a successful career. The more you reach out to HR departments, line managers and candidates, the more information you will get on the role, the business, and the person, which will help in your search for the right candidate.

What are the benefits to working at Elevation?

The team atmosphere is great, it is such a friendly environment to work in. Prior to Covid we did a lot of social events inside and outside of work which were brilliant, it brings us all together to keep us motivated.

Are you planning to celebrate your promotion, if so, how?

I am hoping to book holiday as restrictions get lifted, so I will celebrate whilst I am away.
