Q&A with Kelly Robinson - Promotion to Business Manager

Following her recent promotion to Business Manager within the Business Support division, Kelly shares an insight into her career progression at Elevation, her proudest achievement to date, and why she enjoys recruiting temporary roles for the business support division.

Why did you join Elevation?

At the time, I was living in London and working for another recruitment agency. I decided that I wanted to relocate back up to Yorkshire, so I applied for a role that Elevation were recruiting for. It was at that point when Fran Lee (Senior Director) contacted me to see if I would be interested in joining the business as a Recruitment Consultant.

If I’m honest, I wasn’t sure that I wanted to continue with a career in recruitment. I knew I loved the job itself, but from my previous experiences working in other agencies, I felt that I was just a number and wasn’t valued for my contribution – I wanted more than that.

Giving it one last go, I came into the Elevation office and met with Fran Lee and Greg Parkinson (CEO) to discuss the opportunity. They shared their core values, how Elevation differed from other agencies and explained the career progression they could offer me. I left the meeting with a new lease of life about recruitment. I accepted the role, and it was the best decision I’ve ever made.

How have you progressed throughout your time at Elevation?

I began my career at Elevation as a Consultant within the Business Support division, and after successfully meeting my set targets in the first 12 months, I was promoted to Senior Consultant.

In the last year, I’ve worked closely with Emma Noble (Operations Director) to put a development plan together which would allow me to reach Business Manager level. My plan consisted of a mixture of tangible candidate and client targets, with frequent training and mentoring.

The exposure I’ve had to various other divisions and in particular, the IT sector, has played a huge part in my progression and has expanded the recruitment knowledge I have. Working in the wider market and closely with other directors across the business, has given me an opportunity to learn different skills and establish a broader network which has helped the Business support team.

What will your role as Business Manager entail? How does it differ to your role now?

I will take on a new responsibility of line managing a Resourcer, who will join the business at the beginning of next year. My role will heavily revolve around training and mentoring them, with the end-goal of ensuring they receive the development, training and support to enable them to further in their career with Elevation just like I have so far.

Also, as a Business Manager within Elevation, we are tasked with ensuring that our clients and candidates are consistently given the very best service, whilst also growing our network across the region.

What are you hoping to learn and achieve in this new role?

For me, it will definitely be around personal development. I’m hoping that I can confidently take the step from a non-managerial role to a managerial role. I want to learn key leadership techniques, build on my skills and understand the responsibilities that come with it, but also be able to utilise my personal experiences to offer advice and solutions.

I will be working closely with Emma and Fran to help mentor and guide me through this next step. I’m really excited for everything I’ve got to learn.

To reach this next step in your career, have you been involved in any training, mentoring or had a personal development plan?

Since working at Elevation and being ready to take the next steps in my career, I’ve been given an unlimited amount of support from the management team. It started with Fran, who played a key role in teaching me all I needed to know about recruitment as a whole, the business support division and candidate attraction. She provided training every step of the way and was also the first person that spoke to me about career progression - she put my targets and personal development plan together.

I then had 6 months training with another manager, who offered ways of improving sales techniques, solutions to establish relationships and retain clients and also, how to deal with the ups and downs of recruitment.

As importantly, I’ve had the continued support of Emma Noble and Andy Bath (Senior Director) who have played a significant role in my development.

What I find most important about the management team here, is that they’re always on hand, they encourage you to share any concerns because they genuinely want to help. And likewise, you learn a great deal from them.

What are you most proud of in your career to date?

I would definitely say, building a successful temporary desk at Elevation. From the success that I have achieved we now have consultants that solely recruit for temporary positions, across each division.

Starting it from scratch and establishing a strong client base and a network of candidates that I can immediately reach out to, was a real challenge. I’ve given my all into building this desk and with the help of the wider business support division, we now have very successful function, which is what I am most proud of.

What do you enjoy most about working in the BS division and the team you work with?

The team I work with are fantastic, we have a really supportive dynamic. If one of us is working from home, out on a client visit or meeting with a candidate, we know that whoever is in the office will pick up anything we need. We constantly root for each other and celebrate each other’s successes.

Having Emma as a Manager who is sat with us every day, is a great support and one that I’ve needed in my career. She’s always on hand to ask anything and has played a significant role in building the team culture that we have.

On a personal level, we have a great relationship as a team, we have a vested interest in each other’s lives and that’s what makes coming to work so easy and enjoyable.

What do you enjoy most about recruiting for the temporary BS sector?

Although temporary business support is so fast paced and challenging (especially at the moment with many candidates opting for permanent roles because of the market), I thrive in that environment.

It’s a very rewarding feeling to fill roles on a short turn around for my clients, quite often I do this on the phone with them as they trust my judgement and experience in what makes a good candidate.

What are the benefits to working at Elevation?

The bonus structure we have here is one of the best that I’ve seen and experienced in the market. The people are brilliant, we are all very likeminded and you’re valued as an individual.

Greg and the wider board team are very hands on, they care, take an interest in our lives, and emphasise that family comes first. Likewise, it doesn’t feel like a hierarchy, the management team are sat with us, which makes them more accessible and approachable. That is very special, you don’t get that very often.

Lastly but as importantly are the social events, they are second to none, I can’t wait for our Christmas party and the high achievers’ clubs to start again!

What advice would you give to someone who is hoping to progress their career in recruitment, and ready for the next step?

You have to be ready to work hard, but you will reap the rewards. Essentially, your desk is your own business, so you will only get out what you put in.

At Elevation, they see talent, and everyone is given the opportunity to progress, you just need to demonstrate your passion. But for other companies’ you may need to be more vocal, so express where you’d like to be in the next 5 and 10 years. Ask for training, mentoring, feedback and a personal development plan - that is most valuable!

Last week I went to Valencia, so I celebrated there – it was fantastic!
