Q&A with Roxanna Gibb – Promotion to Senior Consultant

Following her recent promotion to Senior Consultant within the Business Support Division, Roxanna shares her thoughts on working in recruitment, why she joined Elevation and her advice to future recruitment consultants.

Interview with Roxanna

What did you do prior to joining elevation?

I started my career with another recruitment agency, placing candidates in the education sector. I found education recruitment very challenging and wasn’t enjoying it, so at that point I thought that recruitment wasn’t the right career for me.

As I still liked the sales and the client facing environment, I began working in a local estate agent, where I progressed from a Property Manager to a Client Manager during my three years there. I loved meeting new people every day and having sales targets to deliver on.

I then decided to try my luck with recruitment again, but away from the education sector. I wanted to broaden my skills in another discipline, so I joined Elevation as a consultant for the Business Support Division.

What initially attracted you to a career in recruitment?

I wanted to pursue a career that was sales driven but people oriented. I always liked being heavily involved in client liaison and sales, and I felt that was where I thrived most, so having understood that recruitment embodied all of those elements, I knew it was the career pathway for me.

After experiencing a rocky start to my career in recruitment, I moved away for a while but once I found the right company and sector to recruit for, I found my passion again.

Why did you join Elevation?

In 2019, when I was reconsidering a career in recruitment, I was approached by another agency about a consultant role. However, I was also in communication with Sarah Mounsey, who at the time was the Head of Talent at Elevation, and she suggested I come into the office, have a chat about the role and meet some of the team and the directors.

I instantly felt comfortable, the team were extremely likeminded, and we shared the same values. I could see how the recruiters supported one another and by the management too. That really resonated with me, and I knew getting back into recruitment, I needed to work within a company that had that culture.

What will your role as senior consultant entail? How does it differ to your role now?

Over the last few months, I have been more focused on business development, following up with leads and acquiring new clients. I have also been dedicating more time to my existing clients and candidates, keeping in regular contact to further establish relationships.

I think proving my ability in those areas has supported my official promotion. These will be my additional responsibilities moving forward as a Senior Consultant.

What has been your biggest learning curve?

I am very good at working in a fast-paced environment and meeting deadlines, but I used to be very disorganised. So, when I originally joined the company, Fran Lee (Senior Director), helped me manage my routine and implement a structure into my day. That has been my biggest learning curve.

Management at Elevation are great at identifying areas that you could improve on, but they also give really good tips and support to change your ways. The monthly 1-1 meetings that we have across the business were a great way for me to focus on this and see how I had improved on my organisation skills.

What do you enjoy most about working in Business Support recruitment?

Recruiting for business support roles, means we as a team need to wear many hats, because any role that is classed as a support function falls within our remit, and that’s a huge scope. But I enjoy that variation and I have the skills to adapt to that.

I like working with a variety of people at all levels of their careers, with various skillsets and requirements in their job search.

For business support roles, a lot of it is about finding candidates that’s share the same values and fit with the culture of the business, so I have to really get to know my candidates and build a rapport with them, but likewise with clients too, understanding their company, the teams and dynamics, to find the right match. That is what I enjoy most.

What advice would you give to someone about to start working in recruitment?

Choose the right business. There are so many recruitment agencies in the region and across the UK that don’t necessarily support in the right way or have the structure in place to develop and motivate their people. I believe if I would have joined a business that offers what Elevation does, earlier on in my career, I never would have moved out of recruitment.

What are the benefits to working at Elevation?

The commission offerings at Elevation are second to none, and that naturally keeps you motivated.

The people are fantastic, its genuinely such a great environment to work in, we work hard but have a lot of fun too and there is always someone there to give a helping hand.

Elevation has a fantastic reputation, so it makes it easier to attract new clients and candidates. For example, if Engineering and Manufacturing have done a great job, it’s easy for my division to step in and work with them on business support roles.

Are you planning to celebrate your promotion, if so, how?

I am going on holiday to Tenerife next week, so I will be having cocktails on the beach to celebrate. It is my first time abroad since October 2019 and I am so excited.

Elevation have continued their growth plans year on year and have become Yorkshire's leading recruitment firm across 8 specialist areas. Due to this growth, we currently have several new recruitment vacancies from Consultant to Director level in addition to, positions across the wider business support functions.
