Relocating to North Lincolnshire was a personal decision first and a professional one second. Three years on, it is one of the best decisions I have made.
The initial pull was simple. More space. Better value. A pace of life that felt sustainable. What I did not expect was the depth and quality of the career market on my doorstep.
There is a perception problem with places like Gainsborough and the wider DN21 area. People assume limited opportunity, a quieter market, fewer options. In reality, this is a region with serious industrial weight, diverse sectors and a level of investment that many larger cities would welcome.
After nearly a decade in executive search, I have a clear sense of where genuine opportunity sits. North Lincolnshire is one of those places.
British Steel in Scunthorpe is the most visible example of the region’s industrial strength, but it is only part of the story.
What is happening here now is not just continuation, it is transformation. The steel sector is under pressure to modernise, decarbonise and compete globally. That shift is driving demand for a new generation of leadership across operations, engineering, commercial strategy and transformation.
For experienced professionals, this is not about stepping into legacy roles. It is about being part of a sector that is actively reshaping itself.

Just a short distance from Scunthorpe, the Humber is becoming one of the most strategically important clean energy hubs in the UK.
Offshore wind is no longer emerging, it is scaling. Major operators are already established, and further investment is locked in. The scale of planned development will create thousands of roles across engineering, logistics, project delivery and supply chain.
From a recruitment perspective, this is where I see some of the strongest long-term demand. Not just volume hiring, but leadership capability. People who can build, scale and manage complex operations in evolving industries.
Beyond the headline names, there is a well established network of engineering and manufacturing businesses across the region.
These are not small operations. They are technically advanced, commercially aware and often deeply embedded in global supply chains. Many have invested heavily in apprenticeships and long-term talent development, which tells you everything about the sustainability of the market.
For candidates, that translates into real career progression. Not just jobs, but structured pathways into leadership.
Lincolnshire’s role in UK food production is significant, yet consistently underestimated.
The scale of the agri-food sector here creates ongoing demand across operations, technical, supply chain and commercial functions. With increasing focus on automation, efficiency and food security, the need for experienced professionals is only growing.
This is a sector that offers stability, investment and long-term opportunity. It is not standing still.
The geography of North Lincolnshire gives it a natural advantage.
The Humber ports handle a substantial share of UK freight, and the surrounding logistics network supports both the energy and food sectors. This creates consistent demand for leadership across transport, procurement, planning and supply chain management.
It is a market that values experience and rewards those who can operate at scale.

Where there is industry, there is always demand for professional services.
Across Lincolnshire and the surrounding areas, there is steady need for finance, HR, legal and technology talent. The presence of the University of Lincoln adds another layer, providing a pipeline of graduates and supporting ongoing innovation.
For professionals who want access to opportunity without the intensity of a major city, this balance works.
I work nationally. I speak to businesses and senior leaders across the UK every day. I have visibility of markets that are often seen as more competitive or more attractive.
And yet, I chose to base myself here.
This region offers something that is increasingly difficult to find. High value roles in industries that matter, combined with a quality of life that is genuinely better. The commute is manageable. The cost base is lower. The environment is calmer.
It is not a compromise. It is a different kind of advantage.
From where I sit, this is a region at a turning point.
Steel is evolving. Clean energy is accelerating. Food production is modernising. The professionals who recognise that shift early are the ones who benefit most.
In five years’ time, I expect many more people to be talking about North Lincolnshire in the way they currently talk about larger, more established markets.
At Elevation Recruitment Group, we work closely with businesses and senior professionals across Yorkshire, the Midlands and the wider North.
