South Yorkshire’s Employment Boom

Thinktank Resolution Foundation’s latest employment report found that South Yorkshire’s job growth has hit its strongest levels of employment since the recession and has overtaken the rest of the UK.

The Office of National Statistics’ latest employment report shows that the national employment rate reached 75.8%. According to Resolution Foundation, this is due to the boost in job creation in low-employment areas.

Although it’s assumed that the majority of job creation is in London and the South East, the report found that since the 2008 financial crash, South Yorkshire has had the most significant increase in employment rates rising to 71.7% in 2019.

This employment spike is down to the success of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) and an increasing number of business parks in Sheffield and Rotherham.

The AMRC, founded by the University of Sheffield, opened in 2001. Since then the park has become home to the £50m McLaren Automotive factory, leading aerospace company - Boeing’s first European production facility, and a number of state-of-the-art training centres. The centre has also welcomed royal visitors, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge who officially opened the Boeing factory in 2018.

Sheffield city region Mayor, Dan Jarvis, told the Guardian: “Investment to attract global manufacturers like Boeing and McLaren Automotive to the region is paying off.”

The AMRC has boomed with popularity over the past 18 years. However, none of this would be possible without the investment into STEM opportunities and careers in the local area.

South Yorkshire has become a prime location for engineering events by world-class institutions – IMechE, Get up to Speed, and the Big Bang Fair.

As proud business residents in South Yorkshire, we are thrilled to support the IMechE’s Yorkshire Regional Dinner, the regional Speak out For Engineering competition and Get up to Speed with STEM’s annual exhibition.

Get up to Speed with STEM is an annual event which brings together young people and some of the UK’s best pioneering businesses to learn more about the future of STEM careers and what opportunities are available.

The event gives businesses a platform to showcase their work while helping to bridge the skills gap in engineering. Last year’s Get up to Speed had 3,000 attendees and welcomed attractions such as the F1 car and simulator, the world’s fastest car – Bloodhound SSC, and the Vestas World Record Sail Rocket.

This year’s exhibition will feature presentations by Vulcan to the Skies; National Space Centre StarDome; and Sheffield’s very own Simplex SSK 50HP.

The IMechE’s Yorkshire Regional Dinner celebrates the success of the ground-breaking engineering and manufacturing businesses and inspiring professionals. It’s an evening dedicated to looking at the past accomplishments of the engineering industry and the celebration of a new year of exciting achievements.

At this year’s dinner, we will hear talks from IMechE President, Tony Roche, who has incredible knowledge and experience in the transport engineering industry. Joined by Master Cutler, Nicholas Cragg, who has spent over 25 years at British Steel, progressing to a business leadership position. Nicolas went on to start his own company within the oil and gas sector and now is investing his time to educate people about STEM.

He’s a firm believer in improving education for young people to help them exceed their ambitions. You’ll also have the opportunity to network with like-minded professionals and award-winning engineering delegates.

As part of our work with the IMechE, we sponsor the Speak out for Engineering competition each year. This award gives young people the chance to showcase an innovative idea to a panel of judges which includes one of the senior consultants from our Engineering division. The contestants compete in either the South or North Yorkshire heat, and the winners and runner-ups go head to head in the final. The winner is then announced at the IMechE Yorkshire Regional Dinner.

The dinner is one of the most prestigious events of the year, and it gives you an excellent opportunity to network with like-minded people. It will be taking place at Cutler’s Hall in Sheffield, on Friday 22nd March 2019 at 7 pm.
