The Real Reasons Finance Professionals Are Changing Jobs

By Matt Goddard, Business Consultant

The finance job market is moving. Across the UK, professionals at every level, from newly qualified Accountants to seasoned Finance Directors, are reassessing their careers and making moves they might have put off for years. But the reasons are more nuanced than a simple salary chase.

Understanding what is really driving this shift matters, whether you are a professional weighing up your options or a business trying to hold on to the talent it has worked hard to develop.

It Is Rarely Just About the Money

Pay is a factor. It would be dishonest to say otherwise. But when finance professionals are asked why they actually handed in their notice, salary tends to be the trigger, not the root cause.

The more common story is that someone felt undervalued, overlooked, or stuck, and a better-paying offer elsewhere finally justified them to act on a feeling they had been sitting with for months, or sometimes years.

Businesses that respond to resignation with a counteroffer often find it buys only a matter of months before the underlying problem resurfaces.

Career Progression Has Stalled

For ambitious professionals, a clear path forward is not a perk. It is a requirement.

Management Accountants who have been in the same role for three years without a meaningful shift in responsibility, Financial Controllers watching the same people cycle through senior leadership, Part-Qualified Accountants being passed over for study support agreements: these are the situations that quietly erode loyalty.

Finance professionals, particularly those in the early to mid stages of their careers, are acutely aware of how quickly skills can become outdated. If an employer is not investing in their growth, someone else will.

The Relationship with Leadership People do not leave companies. They leave managers.

This is one of the most consistently cited reasons finance professionals give for moving on, and it is one that organisations are slowest to address. A poor relationship with a direct line manager, a leadership team that does not listen, or a culture where Finance is seen as a back-office function rather than a strategic partner are deeply motivating reasons to look elsewhere.

Senior professionals, such as Financial Planning and Analysis Managers and Finance Business Partners, increasingly want to sit at the table where decisions are made. When that seat is not available, they find an employer who will offer it.

Flexibility Is No Longer a Negotiation

The conversation around hybrid and flexible working has moved on. For most finance professionals, remote or hybrid working is now a baseline expectation, not a benefit to be grateful for.

Businesses that have pulled back to full-time office requirements without strong justification have found themselves losing people they did not expect to lose. The professionals who stayed quiet during that transition were often quietly updating their CVs.

This applies across the spectrum, from Accounts Payable Clerks managing personal and family commitments to Chief Financial Officers who have restructured their lives around a two or three day in-office week.

Workload and Wellbeing

Finance teams that have been asked to do more with fewer people, a common story during periods of economic pressure, are starting to see the human cost of that decision.

Chronic overwork, poor work-life balance, and the erosion of boundaries between work and personal time have pushed a significant number of professionals to prioritise their wellbeing over job security. The pandemic accelerated this reassessment for many, and the effects are still being felt.

Professionals are increasingly explicit about this in interviews. They want to work hard. They do not want to burn out doing it.

A Desire for More Meaningful Work

This is especially common among mid-career professionals who have spent years building technical expertise and now want to use it for something that feels worthwhile.

Whether that means moving into a sector they find more purposeful, joining a business at an earlier stage where their contribution is more visible, or stepping into a role where their analytical skills directly shape strategy, the motivation is the same. They want their work to matter.

Finance Business Partners, FP and A Analysts, and Heads of Finance with strong commercial instincts are particularly drawn to roles where they are partners to the business rather than reporters of its results.

What Employers Often Miss

The exit interview rarely captures the full picture. By the time someone is leaving, they are being diplomatic. The real reasons were often visible much earlier in performance reviews that felt like box-ticking exercises, in development conversations that never led anywhere, or in requests for flexibility that were refused without explanation.

Retention is built long before someone starts looking. The organisations that understand this tend to keep their best people. Those that only pay attention when someone resigns are always playing catch-up.

What This Means If You Are Considering a Move

If you recognise any of the patterns described above, you are not alone and you are not being unreasonable. The finance job market is genuinely strong for candidates right now, and the professionals who are making moves are doing so into better roles, with better employers, on better terms.

The key is understanding what you actually want from your next step, not just what you want to leave behind.
